Lesson 24 Beauty
第二十四课美
24-1. A young man sees a sunset and, unable to understand or to express the emotion that it rouses in him, concludes that it must be the gateway to a world that lies beyond.

24-2. It is difficult for any of us in moments of intense aesthetic experience to resist the suggestion that we are catching a glimpse of a light that shines down to us from a different realm of existence, different and, because the experience is intensely moving, in some way higher.

24-3. And, though the gleams blind and dazzle, yet do they convey a hint of beauty and serenity greater than we have known or imagined.

24-4. Greater too than we can describe; for language, which was invented to convey the meanings of this world, cannot readily be fitted to the uses of another.

24-5. That all great has this power of suggesting a world beyond is undeniable.

【讲解】That all great has this power of suggesting a world beyond是主语从句。本句是圆周句（periodic sentence），这种句子的特点是到句末句意才清楚、结构才完整的句子。又如：

Muscle，on the other hand，did not renew.

24-6. In some moods, Nature shares it.
【译文】在某种意义上说，大自然就具有这种魅力。
【讲解】it指上句中this power of suggesting a world beyond。mood本指人的心境、精神状态，句中把mood用于自然界是把自然界拟人化了。
24-7. There is no sky in June so blue that it does not point forward to a bluer, no sunset so beautiful that it does not waken the vision of a greater beauty, a vision which passes before it is fully glimpsed, and in passing leaves and indefinable longing and regret.
【译文】六月的天空不是蓝得不能再蓝，日落不是美得不能再唤起一个更美的景象，一个未被饱览就消失的景象，而且在消失的时候留给人们一种莫名的渴望和遗憾。
【讲解】本句是平衡句（balanced sentence），即由几个相同结构构成的一个句子。又如：
It’s their wealth and security that makes everything possible；makes your art possible；makes literature，science，even religion possible.

a vision which passes…longing and regret作the vision of a greater beauty的同位语。passes和leaves并列作谓语。in passing作状语，修饰leaves。

24-8. But, if this world is not merely a bad joke, life a vulgar flare amid the cool radiance of the stars, and existence an empty laugh braying across the mysteries; if these intimations of a something behind and beyond are not evil humour born of indigestion, or whimsies sent by the devil to mock and madden us,if, in a word, beauty means something, yet we must not seek to interpret the meaning.

【讲解】本句中有几个并列的条件状语从句，其主句是yet we must not seek to interpret the meaning。其中，life和a vulgar之间省略了is not merely；life前省略了if；existence前省略了if；existence与an enemy之间省略了is not merely。并列结构中的相同部分均可省略，以避免重复。braying across the mysteries作laugh的定语。something在句中作名词用。born of indigestion作humour的定语。sent by the devil to mock and madden us作whimsies的定语。to mock and madden us作目的状语修饰sent。

24-9. If we glimpse the unutterable, it is unwise to try to utter it, nor should we seek to invest with significance that which we cannot grasp.
