Summary of Runtao’s conclusion

The history of human civilization demonstrates that innovation has always followed production, regardless of race or religion. Islamic architecture from Arab and Muslim-majority nations has been at the forefront of humankind since the 7th century, and its impact has grown all over the world. Later, Germany outperformed Britain in manufacturing, so did German science and technology innovation outpace Britain. The same thing happened when the US manufacturing surpassed German production while the US was leading the world in invention.

What happened to Boeing was not an accident. Prior to the relocation of American manufacturing abroad, over 90% of Boeing’s aircraft components were produced domestically. Currently, 90% are produced abroad. Because American engineers are unable to develop behind closed doors, a firm that produces only 10% of its components must outsource its R&D to foreign manufacturers, which result the corporation to prioritize short-term cash returns over long-term R&D investments.

The history of human science shows that technical innovation is driven by the manufacturing market. Without manufacturing, it would be impossible to know where the technological barriers are. Once you know it, you can work together to break through it and come up with innovative products.
